The Creation of Murano Glass Goblets Explained in 8 Steps

Aesthetic and functionality combined in one product, Murano glass goblets are rigorously handmade by the glass masters in the prestigious island’s furnaces. This vitreous matter has slowly transformed into one of the most renowned artworks of the lagoon tradition. The Venetian goblet/tipetto is, actually something more than a simple chalice. With good fortune throughout the centuries, its productive process has kept its phases unchanged, despite the improvement given by the modern technologies. It is a fragment of history that can confer to a laid table such added value that only art is able to enhance.
But how is the Murano glass goblet or tipetto realized?

1.    Generally, all begins with a sketch – a fascinating projection of the Master’s inspiration which from the creative tops of his head flows in a drawing shape on a paper through a pencil, or rather more suggestively through chalk on a stool or metal table.

2.    The Master put the proper quantity of melted glass, gathering it around the extremity of a hollow metal rod (process similar to the one of stick and cotton candy) and blowing into the opposite extremity in order to obtain a little malleable sphere.

3.    With quick touches of a nipper, the Master expertly shapes this first vitreous agglomerate and through the help of a colleague – in dialect called servente or serventin – who gets to the master little quantities of melted glass with another rod, he creates some decoration in elevation around the incandescent sphere.

4.    The servente gets closed to the Master keeping in front of himself his metal rod with melted glass in the extremity and the Master – using a nipper for looking better after the assistant links the matter offered by the sphere, properly heated for being accommodating. Here, for a few moments the processing sphere is linked to two metal rods at the same time.

5.    Then, the Master separates his rod from the vitreous matter, pick the one of the assistant and by using a bit metal nipper, he literally opens the sphere broadening the hole leaving by the rod. Thus, thanks to the expert touch of the hand, the tipetto’s cup is created.

6.    Both the Master and assistant, in careful synergy, work for shaping the stem. Working with nipper and big scissor, they prepare the ornaments which will be integrated into the stem (for example curved leaves and flowers) and, once the thin supporting structure is ready, they connect the priors to the latter.
7.    The only part missing is the base of the tipetto, the support of the chalice. The third and last component is obtained putting the proper quantity of vitreous matter on the free extremity of the stem while the other end is still secured to the metal rod. After having moulded the added glassy part making it a spherical form through the rounding movement of the rod, the nipper is used again similarly to the process of the cup.The sphere is rapidly broadened in order to obtain a shape close to a trunk of a dug cone.

8.    To the stem-base block as such is linked the cup already realised and thus, through the magical dance of the mind, eye and hand, the Master extracts a perfectly made Murano’s tipetto from the shapeless matter. The goblet is a model of the glass art into which each element created is able to reinvent – in an absolute unique manner – a charm that persists immutable throughout the centuries.

Luxury Rezzonico Murano Glass Chandelier: A Timeless Masterpiece

With the coming of the Murano glass chandelier,it is felt that the quality has stepped up, at least as far as the richness of the aesthetic elements and the complexity of the production are concerned. Noble father and unrivaled master of this fundamental piece of glass tradition is – without doubts – Giuseppe Briati, who was able to raise the prestige of the Murano art again, which collapsed by the end of XVII under the competition from the Bohemian and English crystal.

He was responsible for the creation of a crystal close to the bohemian one for the brightness, but more suitable to the hot working, and consequently the production of varying chandeliers which can count on the possibility of having bigger dimensions and aesthetic experimentations and shapes prior unimaginable.
The Rezzonico chandelier (primarily made during ‘700) can be considered the prince of the illumination sector. It was made for the homonym family, who lived in the luxury Ca’ Rezzonico on the Grand Canal, nowadays the Venetian eighteen-century museum. This type of chandeliers can have many variations with 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 21, 36 or more lights, even up to 60 since the great chandelier of the Murano Glass Museum is having 398cm height, 226cm maximum diameter and 330kg weight.

The chromatic combinations can be roughly unlimited; the classical style is distinguished by articulate forms of floral sort with branches, fronds, leaves and flowers which cross in magnificent curls, a harmonic whole wherein hundreds of glass pieces, blown and handmade, can be placed on the metal structure. Another aesthetic solution from the eighteen-century tradition is the so-called “cioccaalla Chinese”, the introduction of oriental motifs which resemble the form of a pagoda.
The typical elements of the Rezzonico, quantifiable also in more than 500 handmade-pieces, are placed on the metal structure in order to cover it completely, following a procedure called Investiture.

The concave section, placed in the lower handle of the arms, is called tazzaorcoppa; its old function was to save the wax of the candles, while nowadays with the electric illumination it is used to protect the light refraction shades. Vertical elements usually in a floral style contain the central part of the Rezzonico, called gabbia, in which one can find many other floral motifs, known as the giardino. With the term cornucopia, we define the glass piece which upholsters the handle of the arm. Usually very elaborate, it gives a great valorto the Rezzonico and opening the opera, through the reciea (namely the linking curl) to the use of pendants – decorations hanged on the lower edges of the arms.

To end the technical overview of the Rezzonico, itis important to mention the bossola which is the basic element of the chandelier, a glass cylinder which is slipped all around the metal structure, according to the investitura process. Secondly, there is thecimiero, ausually very rich and gorgeous cover on the summit of the central body.

Murrina Millefiori: Insight into This Exclusive Murano Glassmaking Style

The term ‘murrina’ today points to two different yet similar entities. On the one hand, there is the section of a particular cane, a segment characterized by an enchanting succession of geometric, concentric shapes of various colors; on the other hand, you can see the complete work that is made up of the interaction of these small patterns, according to an organic design that can be realized in plates, bowls, pendants, sculptures, vases, and perfume bottles.

Looking at the origins, the word Murrino was coined in 1978 by Abbot Vincenzo Zanetti, a notable figure in the cultural landscape of Murano in many ambits, including the historiographic study on glass production, the preservation of works through the foundation of the still fully active Glass Museum, the didactics thanks to a drawing school applied to glass production, the education through the establishment of the Circulating Library and even the information, with the help of the local newspaper called “The Voice of Murano”.
With Murrino, the ecclesiastical scholar presented the ancient Roman cups and vessels where the juxtaposition of the individual cane sections revealed abstract or figurative designs, such as flowers, animals, or human portraits. Famous for the aroma they spread, probably because they are intended to contain fragrant essences for ritual purposes or simply embellishment, these objects have often been associated with the well-known myrra perfume, according to an etymology which, however, does not seem to be truthful. The derivation is most likely from the Greek word myrra which indicates a kind of fine and precious land of Middle Eastern origin.

Today, the production of murrine is part of the rediscovery of this particular type of glass by the artisans and artists of Murano in the sixteenth century (after centuries of oblivion in the medieval period), and the glittering development began on the fall of the XIX century by the glass factory Salviati and the Master Vincenzo Moretti.
Two different qualities of murrina "chopsticks" are basically widespread and used in the furnace as well as lab – one with lighter concentric circles and another one articulated in more elaborate shapes such as stars or other geometric crosses.

Here is how the charm of Murrina Millefiori is created. To fully understand how the Murrina is practically done, here are the four fundamental steps of a process that leads to an authentic masterpiece:

•    In both cases, the production starts with the diving of a metal rod tip into the molten glass mass inside a crucible, whose color is carefully studied on the basis of the right combination of chemical elements.

•    Subsequently the glass collected on the end of the rod is immersed in a second crucible, inside which is set glass of different composition and color, and, if desired, also in other crucibles, depending on the layers and the color nuances expected.

•    The cylinder so formed will be of a mass usually around 11/13 lbs, and, to be worn to the cane size, by two workers - called tiracanne until the desired filament will be reached.

•    The murrina, once cold, can be cut, and then each section will show a motif with concentric circles. For a more complex decoration, special machines and molds with vertical grooves will be used to shape the glassy fluid inserted inside, in order to obtain ornaments such as stars or flowers. When the cane is cold and cut, it will reveal sections with star or flower patterns.

Murano Glass Melting Process Explained in 4 Steps

The glass melting process can be considered the heart of what is the tradition of the artistic glass of Murano – the starting point from which all the specific glass making techniques will branch off. Procedures have been the same over the centuries. However, innovation in instrumentation, scientific nomenclature and lively jargon used by workers goes together in an extraordinary dance that swirls inside a world that deserves to be discovered.
1.    Metal crucibles of different sizes are used to contain the composition of elements and to accommodate the melting step. The larger crucible is called "Palato", the smaller ones "Ninfe" and those of still lesser ones " Ninfette". A fresh crucible cannot be used immediately; it should be accustomed within the furnace to a gradually increasing heat and in the matter of a week or a little more, the crucible will be able to withstand temperatures that can reach 1400 degrees.

2.    At one time, the depositing operation of the Palato on the bottom of the oven had a specific name, the so-called "Calada". In fact, the period of preparation for the heat took place on the top of four glass stones (in order to put the entire crucible under thermal stress, also the part below) that did not melt too. Hence, it was therefore necessary to use a hook and a jemmy for moving the four bases and slowly accompanying the Palato until it touched the base of the oven. An evolution of this delicate and difficult operation that could involve four men given the weight of the crucible was the introduction of glassy rocks that could melt gradually, so as to gradually bring the Palato to recline on the bottom.

3.    Another practice, which is useful as an additional protective measure for the crucibles that must withstand the highest temperatures, is called "Invariatura". This is an application of crystal glass along the inner walls of the crucible, so as to obtain a vitreous coating for the protection of metal surface.
4.    At this point, when they are ready for the fundamental "First fusion", in the composition that you want to melt is added the "Rottura", scrap elements of the same chemical type derived from previous mergers that facilitate the unfolding of what you want to get . From the second fusion onwards, it will always be kept as a waste, the Rottura precisely, inside the crucible, and there will be no need to add Rottura from the outside.

Vintage Murano Glass – What Are Its Constituents?

The vintage Murano glass artwork has its roots in 1291 when, by decree of the Serenissima Republic, all the furnaces of Venice were moved to that island. From then on, as in the slow disentangling of a thread through the centuries, this activity has thrived reaching excellent creative heights and developing techniques and tools without ever betraying its identity. Behind the glass has grown a real world unique and unrepeatable, made of hands moving deftly, glances that run from the heat of the furnaces to the water used to cool the material, patience and rapidity of execution, suggestions and sayings forged by the long hours that glass masters and their assistants have spent together working shoulder to shoulder, day after day.
At the center of everything: what is the "partìa"?

At the base of this magic, there is a fitting composition of elements, known as "partia", a precise combination of substances that, depending on type and dosage of each ingredient, can open to the artist or craftsman an almost unlimited range of chromatic possibilities. There are four basic constituents:

•    Silica sand, which alone would melt at around 1750 degrees, thus making it impossible to manage at that temperature.

•    Soda precisely used to lower the melting temperature, in a range from about 1400 degrees to make it fall further and further.

•    Calcium carbonate, an element used to prevent the natural matting effect of soda in motion within the viscous liquid of the vitreous mass.

•    Rinse aid, usually antimony, which is the mean of getting faster clean and erasing small impurities.

To develop this basic composition - that lastly would become crystal glass - in order to obtain from the material the desired color tone come into play oxides, chemical elements one by one associated with a determined chromatic gradient.

To get the yellow, you must use the right amount of cadmium, selenium for the red, cobalt for the blue, copper flake for the green, cadmium and a part of selenium (mixture of oxides corresponding to the two primary colors yellow and red) for the orange, a little part of manganese for the purple amethyst, a bigger one for the black.
Vintage Murano glass has stood the test of time and is still loved and admired by countless art lovers across the world. Based in this iconic island itself, Original Murano Glass s.n.c. is the leading manufacturer and seller of hundreds of Murano glass artworks, realized by several ancient glass making techniques. Contemporary Murano Glass Fusion – Looking at the 6 Steps Involved

One of the most ancient techniques became one of the most recent, thanks to a paradox of history. That is, the Murano glass fusion, the glass which is born from glass, neither from the moulding of sand, soda, carbonate or various oxides in the powerful furnaces, nor the half-processed glass of the rod used in the lamp working art. Instead it is created from a glass sheet, which is fragmented and recomposed according to a defined design, is melted and cooled again, alone or over other sheets.

Let’s take a look at the contemporary Murano glass fusion, step by step:

The modern electric or gas furnaces considerably simplify the production of glass-fused artworks, even if, in any case, the process is still very delicate and requires much competence of the artisans who use such technique.

Usually, these furnaces measure internally at most 200cm x 100cm, thus the glass sheets usedin this technique barely exceed such dimensions. The task of these machineries is of gradually heating the substance roughly at 820°C, which is the fusion point, and letting the substance become less and less viscous to solidifying again in the desired shape. A complete cycle takes around 10-12 hours, in accordance with the dimensions of the glass surface, the type of glass which composed the previous one.
1.    Many different objects can be created, from plates to decorated windows, from jewels to paperweight, but let us take the example of a generic ‘tableau’ made up of glassy pieces. The first step, in any case, is the planning with marker and cardboard. As if one is drawing a mosaic, from the soul of the starting imagination, one poses a beautiful female figure on a wooden background, drawing lines which divide the subject and background in many parts of different dimensions.

2.    Presenting the cardboard on the glass sheet of the selected colour for the dress – previously meticulously cleaned - the possible trees and shrubs in the foreground are cut through the cardboard and the glass. The action is done through a tool called ‘tagliavetro’ or ‘diamante’ and it is a sort of halfway between a marker and a scalpel. In many cases, an expert can draw the lines directly on the glass sheet – freehand – without using the cardboard.

3.    Once this kind of mosaicis reached, then the other parts are made in the same way. The glass pieces are now put on a transparent glass sheet, compatible with the glass used: such sheet would perform the function of a paper sheet, designed to embrace all the subjects.

4.    Through powdered metal oxides, each is tied to a particular colour, and the shades of the background are defined, dusting such material as icing sugar.

5.    Another powder – called ‘distaccante’ – is the agent used as homogeneous and thin layer on the refractory surface within the furnace. As one can easily understand, the aim is to prevent the glass from sticking.

6.    By now, as in a cooking recipe, everything is ready to turn on the oven. Continuing with the cooking metaphor, it is unquestionable that the expertise and the precision of the Murano masters, true top chefs of the glass, are the ingredients through which the best dishes can be done!

An Insight into Murano Glass Lamp working Technique

Lamp working can be considered, related to the process which occurs in the furnace, the other major branch of Murano glass making techniques. It is an operation mostly solitary, during which the craftsman or artist is face to face with the vitreous material to which is ideally and practically connected via the flame of the torch - also called “Cannello”.
It is a method of ancient origin, evolved from century to century, decade by decade, supported by technological inventions developed gradually over time. The name itself reveals the beginning: the heat necessary to melt the glass was obtained from the flame of a candle lamp fed from the air conveyed by a bellows activated by foot. Through the years, this simple instrumentation has been replaced by a metallic tube connected to a propane or methane gas cylinder, nowadays mostly reinforced by oxygen emissions for increasing the temperature of the burning beam that is directed onto the glass.

Murano and Borosilicate glass: the only limit is the creativity of the artist

The two main strands of the lamp working technique are structured on two different types of glass: borosilicate glass, harder and more durable material that requires more heat to be worked, and the Murano glass, composed of sodium and calcium, more ductile, with a longer tradition and far more widespread in the island factories.

Both the processes based on the two types of glass involve the construction of objects through the development of filled and blown bodies. Regarding the creation of filled bodies, the range of items that can be extracted from the vitreous mass is huge, and has as main limitation the artist's creativity: from classic pearls that could become pendants or necklaces to sculptures of plants and animals, from cats to horses; from elephants to beetles; fish and ducks, in a fancy swirl that can only enchant the viewer's eye and stimulate his/her own curiosity.
The starting point of lamp working is the sphere in almost all cases. To obtain the sphere, the artisan or the artist heats the glass rod (a semi-finished product that is sold in three different shades: transparent, pastel and opaline, for an almost unlimited range of color variations) under the flame, turning the wrist forward and backward in order to round up the rod’s end and transform it in a glowing sphere.

At that point, depending on what the product has to be created, lamp workers can use various tools and specific movements for shaping the material until it takes on the desired appearance. One can rub the sphere on the “Bronzin" (the flat metal plate placed above the torch) withcalm, rotator gestures, in order to impart to the melt a more cylindrical form (operation called "Marmorizar") or press it on the same surface but in a different way, with a greater inclination towards the edge, exerting the force necessary to bring out a tip ("Pontizar" in jargon).

In order to facilitate the grip on the glowing sphere,a second rod is used in many cases, generally of lesser thickness, called "Ponteo": once in contact with the sphere, the lamp worker maintains its temperature slightly lower than the molten glass’s one, so to be able to use the "Ponteo" like an operational wand without mixing it with the hot mass in the definition phase.
A real magic is handed down from generation to generation, reinvented every day when the individual craftsman or artist sits behind the stem and leaves free rein to his imagination. Lamp working is a unique charm that takes on its full significance in the workshops scattered through the streets and the “fondamente” of the Island of the Glass.

If you’re unable to visit Venice or Murano Island, you can still buy the finestVenice glass artworks from the comfort of your home. Murano Glass Sculptures within the Furnace and Tools Used to Make Them

The furnace’s two favourite techniques are, undoubtedly, the blowing glass and the massiccio, or massello, or full glass. These are the three synonym expressions that seek to define the marvellous sculpture process of the glass matter. Unlike the blowing one, capable of conferring lightness by the fusion of voids and filled spaces to the artwork, the massello technique is structured like the dynamic elaboration of one quantity of matter, or like a progressive addiction of vitreous graft around a primary central nucleus. The horizon of sculpture possibilities is limitless: from classic horses of roughly 20 cm to life-size animals; from miniatures of human figures to colossuses in the most disparate positions; from massive abstract artworks to elegant furniture capable of enriching any room with the spell of a form of art which cannot be found elsewhere.
The Master’s main tools…after his own hands

In Murano furnaces, the Master’s creative genius and ability are already revealed from centuries, constituting time to time a pantheon of names, faces, and moreover hands: heritage in constant expansion of the glass island, generation to generation. Fundamental support to the creation of an artwork by the massello technique is the arsenal of tools which the artist uses within his daily, fascinating work. Take a look at these tools underneath.

The Scagno is a particular seat on which the master frequently sits to facilitate his work. It is fitted with two large armrests cladded of metal sheets, on which the artist can put the rod in constant rotation, facilitating the manipulation of the bolo (the first quantity of incandescent glass extracted from the crogiolo) and the possible, viscous successive addictions.

The Canna – a metal tube completely drilled, often simply called ferro – is roughly 1.5m long and with a diameter of 2/4cm. It is the main tool in both the blowing techniques and the massello ones. In the latter, such rod is used to pick on one extremity of the vitreous mass, to work it later with other tools. The rod is constantly kept in rotation for avoiding imperfections given by gravity.

The Puntello is a rod used by an assistant of the master ordered to put other agglomerates in contact with the present one on the rod of the Master, in order to create crafts of various dimensions and forms. The puntello can get to the Master’s hands in some particular phases of glassmaking.

The Borselle are metal pliers of main importance in the massello technique. They are used to stretch the viscous glass and there are many types of them, in accordance with the specific tasks that they have to carry out: da si̬gar Рthat is, to saw Рfor dividing two quantities of matter; da pissegar, to string the glass lengthening it in some points; a sculeoto or a scuregoto, ending with two protuberances similar to spoons; a gelosia, with the extremities bearded with a particular frame which is impressed on the glass; a spin de pesse with a frame similar to a fishbone; lissie if it has a plain structure, not intended to the pressure decoration, but only to the stretching action.

The Tagliente is similar to a robust scissor with straight or rounded blades, according to the desired cut which has to be done in the first stages of the glass processing.

Chalcedony Glass of Murano: An Ancient Glass, Forgotten and Then Rediscovered

Murano glass artwork is a particular and defined universe which has never ceased to evolve, redefine, explore and reinvent itself since the 1291 with the issuance of the Decree ratified by Serenissima to move the furnaces to the island.

The cases in which, over this path of more than seven centuries, particular compounds were forgotten and then rediscovered are not lacking in the chronicle of this fabulous artwork. In this long period, indeed, there were times when the search for ancient techniques like chalcedony glass making was really central to the Murano Masters’ horizon of interests.
The second half of the nineteenth century is emblematic. Considering that until about 1850 the aesthetic experiment was still dominated by Renaissance and Baroque taste, in the following decades it was possible to undertake an in-depth analysis of archaeological finds collected in various museums, including Etruscan, Pompeian, Roman, Phoenician and Assyrian objects.

The Rediscovery of Chalcedony Glass

In this somehow philological spirit of glass studies there is also the rediscovery of chalcedony glass, whose composition had been encoded in the lagoon towards the middle of the fifteenth century, but then, after about a couple of centuries, felt into oblivion.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, this resource of Muranian glass work arose from her ashes thanks to the Master Lorenzo Radi, a curious and great innovator in the field of artistic production. This true reconquest of the creativity allowed the island to regain one of the most precious gems of its own collection.

The 3 Distinctive Features of Chalcedony Glass
The Name: The reference to gemstones or value stones is not entirely confined to metaphor. In this case, in fact, the chalcedony glass takes its name from a variant of quartz, the one in which it appears as a compact mass of microcrystalline silica, already used in antiquity as a decorative element for the creation of cams and carvings.

The Variety: But, the chromatic range of chalcedony glass does not stop at a single type of stone. In the vast and unpredictable color varieties that this vitreous typology embraces, it is possible to recognise all the nuances of agate, onyx, malachite, lapis lazuli and jasper.
The Composition: Particularly difficult to realize, chalcedony glass has the peculiarity of joining the canonical glass sphere with silver salts and other coloring oxides. This extraordinary chemical process, coupled with the talent of the Masters of Murano, allows the creation of wonderful works in which an opaque background is streaked with enchanting warm and dark shades, a real turbine of lights and shadows capable of ravishing even the eyes of the most experienced observer.

The rediscovery of chalcedony glass is in full view at OriginalMuranoGlass.com – the leading online store for a wide range of artworks handmade using vintage Murano glass techniques. Murano Glass Mirror – 7 Steps to Make this Reflective Venetian Artwork

A mirror has always been a suggestive element. Jim Morrison said, "Remember that life is like a mirror:she smiles at you if you look at her smile."Roman Price, the founder of social motivational website LifePulp.com, wrote: "If you’re still looking for that one person who will change your life, take a look in the mirror.”

From aphorisms to cinema, from poetry to animated design classics, from music to everyday life, the mirror crosses our path in many situations. It is a useful object but has always been a decorative element of great importance in the aesthetics of a home, a palace, and an office as well.

History of Venetian Mirror: From Its Origins in Versailles to the Present Day
The Venetian mirror, one of the most renowned facets of Murano glassware tradition, adds to the usefulness and sense of taste of a multi-century tradition that has been refining over time without ever betraying the fundamental principles from which it had originated.

After a first production dated back to 1369, the Venetian mirror had under gone two fundamental moments in its phase of early development; first, the introduction of crystal glass in the middle of the fifteenth century, thanks to the inventor Angelo Barovier and second, the definition of an effective and functional process of polishing glass plates by Vincenzo Redor in 1540, which makes this reflective object to be a real marvel of the sixteenth century design.

From that moment on, artisans and artists involved in the creation of mirrors have consolidated their fame internationally, taking on a prominent role within the Serenissima. An example is the case of Gerolamo Barbin, born in 1661, who, enticed by the Minister of Finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert, went along with some of his colleagues to Louis XIV France, despite the restrictions of the Republic of Venice on the export of this kind of precious knowledge. There he worked for a few years at the Manufacturing Royale des glaces de miroirs, in the Parisian district of Saint Antonine, and even came to work at Mirror Gallery in Versailles. Expressing the desire to repatriate, thanks to his unique ability and creativity, he obtained the approval of Venice and resumed his production in the lagoon.

How is a Venetian or Murano glass mirror realized? Following are the 7 key steps involved. Even today the expertise and inventiveness of Murano artists come to the fore in all the fundamental steps needed to create these extraordinary handmade objects.

1.    As the preliminary step, the design of the mirror is materialized based on the measurements and the study of the "light", the arrangement of the glass parts which will then, in their reciprocal matching, compose the mirror as if it were a puzzle or a mosaic. Unlike jigsaw puzzles and mosaics, however, the Venetian mirror usually does not consist of many small fragments, but of a small number of marginal sections that go to form the perimeter of a broader reflective surface.

2.    Then a wooden structure is madein dimensions suitable to accommodate both the mirror that is being prepared and the frames that will accompany it.

3.    Once the glass plate has been cut to the desired size, the surface is wisely engraved with the most varied decorations, from floral textures to bucolic scenes of the Renaissance taste, from miniatures of static or moving animals to representations of mythological events or characters.

4.    Silver is then poured on the plate. This is an extremely delicate procedure, in which the skill of the craftsman has the task of not letting impurities and spreading a silvery veil of homogeneous thickness.

5.    If required, an aging chemical treatment is performed based on specific compositions capable of giving the mirror all the charm of vintage taste.

6.    The mirrors are then placed inside frames often very elaborate (almost a work of art in a work of art), laminated in gold or silver and fastened with nails with covered top in glass.

7.    Venetian mirrors can be completed with the grafting of crystal decorations along the margins, additional elements that can further embellish an already-effective creation itself. These crystal sculptures are made in Muranese furnaces and generally represent floral subjects such as leaves, flowers or little branches, and have carefully selected colors (by designers, mirror artisans or customers) in order to create chromatic effects of refined taste.
You can explore a host of authentic Murano glass mirrors handmade using the above 7 fundamental steps at OriginalMuranoGlass.com – a big Murano-based online shop for Venetian glass objects. It is home to exquisite selections of Venetian glass lamps and chandeliers, blown glass figurines, hand blown drinking glasses, glass bowls for centerpieces, exclusive vases, beaded jewelry, gift items for various occasions, and so on. Since then, the glass objects that have been made in Murano are famous and sold worldwide. The artisans have been constantly refining their techniques to create all kinds of glass effects. The artworks they produce have been known for their highest degree of quality and creativity for centuries. Glass makers usually pass on their craft to the next generation in their family.

How to get there?
You might be approached by different salesmen who offer the service of taking to the Murano Island and their furnaces by free boat rides. If you take the offer, then be prepared to buy the items in their showrooms with a lot of pressure. Visiting Murano by using a public means of transportation is much preferred. Once you reach the island, get off at any store. Make a plan to spend a half or full day to stroll through various shops.

Where to visit?

Murano Glass Fish Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea

An aquarium is a vivarium of any size having at least one transparent side in which aquatic animals or plants are displayed. It is a water-filled tank in which fishes swim around.Small aquariums are usually kept in homes by fish lovers. In many cities, there are larger public aquariums.

Most of the aquariums consist of glass panes bonded together by 100% silicone sealant and plastic frames are attached to the lower and upper edges for decoration. A glass aquarium can be constructed up to 1000 liters. The first modern aquarium made of glass was developed in the 19th century. Earlier, glass aquariums commonly had steel or slate bottoms which allowed them to be heated underneath by an open flame source of heat. These aquariums had glass panels attached with metal frame that was sealed with putty. Sometimes, laminated glass was used which had the advantages of both acrylic and glass. For many years, glass aquariums have been a popular choice to decorate homes. Compared to acrylic, glass aquariums are more scratch resistant.
Instead of keeping live fishes and underwater animals in the aquarium, have you ever thought of adorning your home with a Venetian or Murano glass aquarium featuring beautiful lifeless fishes? A stunning work of art, the Murano glass aquarium sculpture is handmade using very difficult techniques like Sommerso. First, the glass master makes the little fishes and afterwards, they are molten in glass stone at a higher temperature. This can also be an innovative way to have an aquarium at home. There is no maintenance at all. You’ll never have to feed them and never change water since they never die. And you can have a nice holiday whenever you want!

Following are some of the best Murano glass aquariums handcrafted by glass masters. These are available in different sizes to decorate your home.

•    Small sized aquarium ball: The lovely fish ball aquarium is made with Sommerso technique. It is handmade by a difficult technique. As mentioned above, the glass master first creates the tiny fishes, which are then molten in a glass stone at a higher temperature.

•    Round aquarium: These aquariums are also handmade with Sommerso technique. This is a creative way to have an aquarium at home since it doesn’t require any maintenance and the fishes never die; you know why!

•    Fused glass aquarium: This beautiful sculpture is made with the technique of fused glass. It is handmade in layered glass.

•    Tropical aquarium: This luxury sculpture is made with the Sommerso technique and comes with a LED light to let it shine. It is full of charm and elegance and a fantastic piece of art.

•    Fish abstract: This abstract sculpture is worked free hand on a punty in solid glass and also polished by hand. It is rich in elegance and attention to details.
These are some of the popular Murano glass aquariums made using original Venetian glass making techniques and are a great gift idea for any occasion. You can bring home a genuine glass fish aquarium made in Murano by ordering it from OriginalMuranoGlass.com. Murano Glass Beads: The Art of Making These Elegant Beads

Before delving into Murano glass beads, we should first learn a bit about Murano glass. It is a type of glass exclusively made in Venice, primarily in the island of Murano. The place is popular in the whole world for its colorful, intricate and skillfully made products.

The Art of Making Murano Glass Beads
The procedure of making Murano glass is rather complex. In this whole process, glass passes from a liquid to a solid state. In between, there is a state when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is the particular time when the glass can be given different shapes. Murano glass artisans use different tools such as borselle, canna da sofio, pontello, scagno, and tagianti to accomplish their tasks.

For over 5000 years, beads have been made of glass. The discovery of fire was an important step in glass bead making. The history of bead making in Murano shows it all started when Marco Polo returned from his travel with the beads of Asia. Then local artisans took the Marco polo’s precious stones and produced the beads in glass by using their skills.

Wound Beads or Lamp Work Or PerleaLume Venetian Beads

Wound beads can be defined as ones having wound over a mandrel at the time of melting glass. Originally, the Venetian beads are the wounds over a ferrous mandrel which are then covered by a mixture of clay and silica which gives the bead some space for contraction. After it becomes cool, it is removed from the mandrel.

What Is the Difference Between Murano Beads and Venetian Beads?

Truly, there is no difference. It’s only a matter of marketing terms since Venice is more popular than Murano.

What Are the Beads Made of?

They are mainly made of 70% silica. Venetian beads are made of a type of glass known as soda glass with 90 degree COE which is a measurement of expansion in cooling and heating. The beads start to be made from glass rods produced in Murano. The round beads are very strong. The longer beads and shapes that have points are delicate. But it’s better to treat them gently as these are made of glass and can break.

Why Are Murano Beads Costlier Than Others?

While determining the price of glass beads, several factors need to be considered. One is the cost of labor. Another one is the availability and desirability of the product. In Venice, glass beads are still handmade. There are a limited number of people practicing this craft in Venice, so supply is also limited. They always provide original, high quality products. So, Venetian beads are not cheap to buy.

How Can You Take Care of Glass Beads?
Before using them, it is recommended to give the beads a good bath, because the process of making beads is importantly a chemical process. This way, there will be no residue left on beads. Soap and water are used to clean and make them shine. There is no need for stronger solution.

If you’re looking to buy Murano beads Italy, then it is advisable to visit OriginalMuranoGlass.com that specializes in authentic, handcrafted Murano glass artworks and boasts of its own factory on the island itself. Venetian Glass Popular Worldwide for Being Unique and Colorful

Venetian glass is a type of glass products made in Venice, primarily on the island of Murano. It is popular worldwide for being colorful, elaborate and skillfully made. Most of the important characteristics of these products were developed by the thirteenth century. Towards the end of thirteenth century, the center of the Venetian glass factories moved to Murano. Byzantine craftsmen played an important role in the development of the Venetian glass. In 1204, some fleeing artisans came to Venice. By the sixteenth century, Venetian artisans gained control over the transparency and color of their glass products, and mastered various modern decorative techniques. Efforts were made to keep these glass making techniques within Venice, but they became known elsewhere and the Venetian style glassware was produced in other Italian cities too.

In the sixteenth century, Venetian glass makers used to make vessels using the millefiori technique. Diamond engravings were also made possible during this century by making improvements in the quality of glass. The staple products of the Venetian glass makers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were drinking glasses. The peculiar Venetian characteristics were the elaborate workings on the stem with tools such as pincers. Symmetrical wings are drawn at each side. This type of drinking glasses and some other vessels with flared bowls are known as bouquetiers. In the eighteenth century, competition from other countries caused a decline of Venetian glass.

Look-Alike Venetian Glass
Since the tenth century, Venice has been a trading and manufacturing center for glass. By the thirteenth century, Venetian glass making was restricted to the island of Murano. As a result, both Murano and Venice used to describe the same glass. Importers and tourists bought thousands of glass pieces in Murano, thereby skyrocketing their popularity. This led to the production of a high range of counterfeits and look-alikes. Sometimes, identifying Venetian glass can be frustrating because most pieces are not permanently marked at the time of manufacture. If they are marked, it is mostly with stickers and paper labels that can easily wear off through washing over time. It’s also possible that labels can be switched or removed.

So, the best way to identify lookalikes is to study them in details, e.g.by determining their glass making technique, design and quality of glass. A useful indication of Venetian origin is the color and quality of glass. Look-alikes are made of only two to three colors. Venetian glass is made up of average 5 to 9 or more colors and they are usually thicker.

Weight is another consideration to identify fake ones. Original Venetian pieces generally weigh more than the duplicates. Venetian artisans make things differently. So,their products weigh more than a comparable volume of faux glass. Venetian glass is the result of many centuries of dedicated experiments with glass and colors. And, no look-alike can take its place.
